The initial steps when you encounter a data loss situation is critical. Identifying when and when not to use software can help you avoid a lot of problems.
When to use software
- accidental deletion of data
- virus
- deletion of partition
- operating system corruption
- drive formatted (but not reinstalled)
- sector 1 gone bad or a few bad sectors (less than 100)
When NOT to use software
- power surge, electrical damage
- water, smoke, physical damage (ie. dropped)
- RAID (most software is not designed for multiple drive set ups)
- accidental system restore or overwrite (don't make it worse)
- multiple bad sectors (ie. 1000's)
You need to decide whether you're willing to spend the money to have a professional examine your drive as well. If you're not willing to spend the money then try everything in the book. A professional lab will cost you more than $300 and can skyrocket to thousands. Just remember that with the professionals you get what you pay for.
